Chapter 10

Lets make a deal

“Mr. Albrin and Mr. Delcole …”

The two students slowly walked to center of the room were a pair of chairs awaited the both of them. Alex noted that the headmaster choose to use one of the larger lecture halls for this, having many rows of benches on both sides of the room. In them sat the faculty and the academy alumnus. This only filled half of the hall with the rest of benches filled with a large contingent of other people that were summoned to bare witness to the proceedings. Both Lance and Alex made their way to the chairs and sat down.

Several minutes passed before the headmaster spoke

“For the past four years the faculty of this academy have put up with your petty rivalry thinking that it would help hone your talents. The incident that transpired two nights past has caused the deaths of 3 of your fellow students.”

“But I saw it! …. It only went after Finnegan he was the only one attacked, Jorrha and Wesley were only slightly injured.”

“Mr. Albrin! That is enough you will speak only when asked to, now sit down. I will not ask you again.”

Mrs. Annelin was just as deeply dismayed. However she took a softer les harsh stance on the events, as the assistant head master it was her duty to be there, behind the both of them stood a few other members of the faculty … at least it was someone whom Alex Knew,

“Both Mr. Winters and Mrs. Ravenheart perished early this morning succumbing to a vile unknown toxin. It appears that the spikes on the beasts tail secretes a slow acting but very potent venom. By the time that they started to show symptoms it was to late for the academy’s healers to do any thing”

Interrupting Mrs. Annelin, the headmaster bellowed once more.

“What the both of you have done have not only gone against the academy rules, both of your actions have set free something has been imprisoned in the red jade crystal since the time that the gods themselves walked the land, Something that this academy has been charged with guarding for the past 500 years. Now it is free and hunting for something.

Beads of nervous sweat started to form on Lance’s brow. He knew that the only recourse for their actions was expulsion from the academy. This to him was a fait worse than death, moving back home and going in to the family’s business was not his destiny. He had plans for his life, being a merchant trader was not one of them. In the past when he screwed up his family’s money and name would be enough to get him out of any jam, there was no way that could help him now. Lance kept rerunning the events in his head each time formulating a what if…. What if I did this or what if I did that? After all it was his spell that shattered the crystal. This could not be happening to him

Alexander on the other hand was the polar opposite. Calm to the point that the news that his fellow students deaths did not even faze him Alex faced the same fate as lance. This unnerved Lance even more. Why is he so calm? He asked him self. Did he cut a deal?.

What Alex did next shocked every one; he got up then walked to the center of the room. All eyes focused on him. The head master of the academy was there as were all of his instructors, he did a quick glance to the corner of the room slowly looking over all the spectators. Alexander’s eyes froze on his parents for a fraction of a second then he moved onto the front of the room. He did not have to rely on his gifts to sense their disappointment in their son. It was hard to tune out the random thoughts from the crowd that some one with his gifts could pick up. Most people there looked upon the two young men with disgust and contempt save for one. The one voice in the crowd of thoughts instructed him on what to do next. The man was well hidden, hiding himself in the shadows.

“Do not worry Alexander it will work out in the end and it is for the best. After this meet me with your friends in the aspen grove just outside the academy gates.” With that said Zander closed his mind to his younger self and made his way outside.

“I Alexander Delcole herby admit that I am the one and only person whom through his actions caused the deaths of three other students of this academy and that I take full responsibility for the event that transpired two days past. I will add that Mr. Albrin was in no way involved.”

“Alex you cant do this it was my fault!…. my fault!!!.”

The confession had taken the head master by surprise just as it did to Lance, The head master expected to have both of the boys break down in an emotional outburst begging for leniency. After all this put a wrench in the big speech he had prepared.

“ With that said Mr Delcole, Mr. Albrin you are free to go… guards please escort the young man back to his dorm room. As for you Alexander Delcole, You have sealed your fate. What you have done is unforgivable. We at the academy expected more from one of its most promising students…. I her by have no choice but to expel you from this academy effective immediately. You will be stripped of any and all honors that you have earned while here. Once we are done here you will be escorted off of the academy grounds and banned from ever returning.”

Alex did not show it but he was relived, He knew that he could have been handed over to the king’s guards to face criminal charges for the deaths of his fellow students. The outcome of that would be a public execution. It also was strange of what he known of the head master, he knew that he was an eye for an eye type, and had proven this on many other occasions in the past.

Chapter 11

Treasure

Her laughter quickly subsided as the the unnatural light of the summoned fire cut through the darkness and for the first time she had a chance to see the inside of the entrance of this fastness that sheltered herself and the family under her guardianship. The walls of the cave had been exquisitely carved in ancient times by unknown artisans There was no doubt that this place predated the formation of the kingdom of Ascalon. Natasha was intrigued by the runic writings on the cave walls. They emitted a pale iridescent glow now and grew brighter as she approached. Some how the runes fed off the magic energies used to create the witch fire and began to fluoresce on their own. Every where she looked the runes covered every suffice, some even floated several inches above the cave wall. Nat and lance were awestruck at this repository of forgotten knowledge. Most of the writings were in several dead languages, while the newer runes appeared to be a form of ancient ascalonian.

“Korban quickly there is a large leather bound book and writing supplies in my pack. Can you bring them to me, I must get as much of this written down as I can.”

“Write what down, I see nothing ?”

“Do not worry about that just get me my book satchel, you will see what we can once I transcribe and decipher the runes, this may be why the waters here are untainted.”

Korban was gifted with the use of weapons. Having practiced with every thing from hammers to swords and even more exotic weapons, it was one of the benefits of being the son of the village smithy, However he was not touched buy the gods and thus he could see the cave the way the mesmer and elementalist could. The young warrior made his way to the back of the cave where what supplies they had been stashed. He found the black satchel that most of the time never left the mesmers side.

Several hours had passed Natasha managed to write down all she could see, once done she quickly closed the book and returned it to the protection of the satchel.

“It will take me a little time to fully translate the runes, but that is for another day, lets get back to the village. Lance go tell the others I will be ready head out in a few minutes , I have to go and get the rest of my belongings.”

She quickly made her way to the area in the back of the cave where the fresh water spring was located and where the family had camped. There she gathered what little she had carried with her and grabbed her stave Natasha turned to leave but her way was blocked by Korban's little sister. The young girl stared at Natasha with s addend eyes for what seamed like an eternity. The somber mood was broken when a tear started to make its way down the girls cheek.

In a voice not much louder than a whisper she made her plea “Do not go.... preezee” With that said the girl began to cry. Some how she knew that her protector was going to be leaving soon.

The commotion had brought her mother over to see why her child was crying. By then Natasha was kneeling and drying the tears with a soft cloth that had materialized in her hand.

“I must go young one I must find out hat has happened to my friend” The sad look of the girl almost brought Natasha to tears as well.

” I do not have much but I will give you what I can spare right now” Quickly passing a small pouch to the woman. “ this will help your family out in the next few months”.

Natasha's attention returned to the gir.l " I have something for you as well.” Natasha pulled a silken bundle from her shoulder bag and passed it to the girl. What sadness that was in the girl quickly faded as she unwrapped her gift. She lifted her new treasure in the air to show her mother. In one hand was a silver inlaid mirror and the other a matching hairbrush.

“Mommy see ....see Mommy ... Tank-ue,Tank-ue, Tank-ue”

“You are welcome young one, Before I go I must talk to your mother”

with that said she ran off to try out her new treasure.
